Last month the Deputy Secretary from the Singapore Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment visited Bangor University’s Nuclear Futures Institute. The visit was part of a visit to learn more about nuclear safety and research in the UK. Singapore is considering nuclear power as a long-term option for low carbon and secure electricity supply. The aim of the visit to Bangor University was for Singapore to learn about NFI’s nuclear research activities. The Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor for Research welcomed the party to Bangor University at the University’s Menai Science Park (M_SParc) Facility. Professor Williams gave a presentation on the development of nuclear energy in UK, and this was followed by a presentation from GBE-N on the proposals for the deployment of SMRs in the UK. Professor Bill Lee welcomed the visitors to NFI and Professors Simon Middleburgh and Michael Rushton gave the visitors a comprehensive introduction to NFI and its nuclear research activities. Professor Robins from the School of Ocean Sciences gave the visitors a introduction to the work of the School in relation to modelling of pollutants in the marine environment around North Wales. This was followed by a tour of NFIs large rig thermal hydraulics laboratory. The following day the Singapore Officials visited NFI’s Dean Street nuclear laboratories and had further discussions on NFI’ research activities on fuels for nuclear power plants, thermal hydraulics, materials in extreme environments, tritium research for fusion applications, nuclear fuels for space applications, nuclear medicine and nuclear policy and regulation. After visiting Bangor University Professor Williams jointed the visitors to observe a major nuclear emergency exercise the following day in Lancashire.
