The first year cohort of NEF PhD Students visit Imperial College London to attended a series of lectures in a module named an Introduction to Nuclear Engineering.
Across four days they covered a broad range of topics. The first day covered the history of the nuclear sector from Chicago Pile-1 to modern day Generation IV reactor plans along with basic reactor designs and their performance. The next day, they attended a lecture on basic reactor physics and how a nuclear reactor works on a fundamental level. The third day consisted of lectures on both reactor engineering and nuclear safety management. The fourth and final day they attended an introductory lecture to nuclear policy followed by a lecture on nuclear accidents and case studies.
Josh Hughes reflected, “This series of lectures provided me with the fundamental knowledge to nuclear engineering, which was really beneficial as several members of our cohort are not from a nuclear background. The event also gave us an opportunity to network with the fellow researchers within the cohort.”
