PhD Project-

Understanding phase decomposition in SMART-W alloys in a fusion power plant environment

Sponsor- Manchester CDT/UKAEA

Eron obtained an integrated master’s degree in Material Science and Engineering at Imperial College London in 2024. Having proposed and completed a final year project to investigate the mechanical properties of diffusion bonded Tungsten and Tungsten Carbide for a first wall application in fusion reactors.

Eron joined Bangor University having secured funding for a PhD through the Fusion Engineering CDT and UKAEA and will work in tandem with a experimental based twin-project at the University of Oxford. He is part of the NFI’s Materials for Nuclear & Extreme Environments, and his work focuses on understanding phase decomposition in SMART-W alloys in a fusion power plant environment. His PhD runs in close parallel with the experimental work being done where theoretical predictions are validated using advanced characterisation and irradiation testing. Through this integrated model-experiment framework, Eron’s research directly contributes to improving accident tolerance, irradiation resistance, and long-term engineering reliability of tungsten-based fusion materials. He uses a combination of first-principle density theory, machine learning based interatomic potentials, and large-scale atomistic simulations to explore how different factors can affect phase decomposition. This will then help improve the design of optimised SMART-W alloy compositions and thermal processing strategies.
