Our Facilities

Our Approach

We adopt a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to research and innovation in nuclear science and engineering. Our strategy is centred on advancing nuclear technologies to support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.

Focus on Emerging Nuclear Technologies

We concentrate on both existing and next-generation nuclear power generation technologies. This includes research into commercial light-water reactors, as well as emerging technologies like small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced modular reactors (AMRs). The institute's proximity to sites earmarked for new nuclear projects, such as Wylfa and Trawsfynydd, positions us strategically to support these developments.

Development of Advanced Research Facilities

NFI has established state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Bangor University Fuel Fabrication Facility (BUFFF). BUFFF provides an innovative platform for studying the manufacture of ceramics, including nuclear fuels, allowing for the visual assessment of the sintering process under various atmospheres.

Developing skills for the Next Generation

A cornerstone of NFI’s mission is cultivating the skills pipeline for the nuclear sector. Through educational programs, training opportunities, and collaboration with schools and universities, NFI is investing in the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technicians needed to sustain and grow the nuclear industry in the UK and beyond..

Our state-of-the-art facilities provide the foundation for pioneering research and innovation

Our main facilities and offices are located in

Dean Street

The Nuclear Futures Institute at Bangor University operates several advanced research facilities across its campuses, including those located on Dean Street in Bangor. These facilities support a wide range of nuclear science and engineering research, our main facilities are:

BUFFF – Bangor University Fuel Fabrication Facility
Mechanical Testing Lab
General Laboratory

Our large working rigs are located in

M-SParc

At the Menai Science Park (M-SParc) on Anglesey, the Nuclear Futures Institute (NFI) of Bangor University operates several advanced facilities that play a pivotal role in nuclear research and innovation. Our two main research facilities are:

BULLET – Bangor University Lead Loop for Erosion Testing
THOR – Thermal-Hydraulics Open-access Research

Our Equipment

Our laboratories house specialist instrumentation for materials characterisation, radiochemistry, and additive manufacturing, alongside high-performance computing resources for modelling and simulation. Key equipment includes X-ray computed tomography (CT) systems, scanning electron microscopes (SEM), and radiation detection and handling tools, enabling researchers to study nuclear materials safely and in detail. Together, these facilities provide the foundation for cutting-edge research, training, and innovation across the nuclear sector.

Below are some of our key equipment items.
