On the 9th November 2022, volunteers from the NFI, along with other groups in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, held an EESW (Engineering Education Scheme Wales) Girls in STEM day for girls from local secondary schools. The event saw 90 girls participate in the day, which was filled with science related activities, aimed to encourage girls to take an interest in STEM subjects. The NFI set up a range of interactive nuclear-related activities, including a maths-related fuel rod game and robotic arm task, where the girls were asked to sort cylinders of pretend nuclear waste in accordance to colour. Along with some of the other interactive games that were used during the day, these were lent to the NFI from Magnox Ltd, and were formerly used and displayed in the visitor centre at Wylfa Power Station. NFI staff and PhD students also had the opportunity to share their route into science with the girls, and were able to answer the nuclear-related questions that came up. The day was a great success and teachers from local schools were keen to have their pupils visit the department again.
