Established in 2010 by the Worshipful Company of Drapers and Queen Mary University of London, the Drapers’ Academy is a secondary school and sixth form located in Romford, Greater London. On Wednesday, 3rd May 2023 the Drapers’ Academy hosted a year 10 to year 13 STEM Fair, showcasing to the Academy’s students the range of exciting careers available in science and engineering. Invited to attend this event and represent Bangor University’s Nuclear Futures Institute (NFI), were PhD students Harvey Plows and Conor Buchanan, who’s projects are both part funded by the Drapers’ Company.
At this event, Harvey, along with speakers from other organisations, was invited to give a 30-minute presentation. During his talk, Harvey introduced the work of the NFI and discussed the role of nuclear energy in tackling the interconnected climate and energy crises. Harvey concluded his presentation by introducing different research disciplines within nuclear engineering; highlighting the degree subjects and employment pathways that would help students peruse careers in these disciplines. Alongside this presentation, Harvey and Conor staffed an NFI stall in the main event hall, where the attending students were able to come and discuss nuclear science and engineering.
It is hoped that this could be the first of many future outreach collaboration between the NFI and Worshipful Company of Drapers, hopefully encouraging students to peruse interests and careers in nuclear engineering.
