Code Meets Core: Bridging Simulation and Reality at ESNMS 2026

The fourth edition of the European School on Nuclear Materials Science was an incredibly enriching and memorable experience. Over the course of five days, I was introduced to a wide range of experimental and computational approaches within materials science, many of which were new to me. The programme combined in-depth lectures, collaborative coursework, and networking opportunities, all of which contributed to a well-rounded and engaging learning environment.

The lectures covered topics ranging from X-ray diffraction techniques to atomic-scale modelling, offering insights into both the practical and theoretical aspects of nuclear materials research. Coming from a primarily experimental background, I found the computational components particularly valuable. They helped me develop a deeper appreciation for how simulations and modelling complement experimental work. In particular, I gained a clearer understanding of how computational models are validated against experimental data, and how the two approaches must work together to produce reliable and meaningful scientific results.

On the first day, we participated in a poster session, which served as an excellent introduction to the other attendees and their research. This provided me with the opportunity to present my own work to a diverse audience, receive constructive feedback, and engage in discussions with others working in similar fields. It was also a great way to begin forming connections with fellow participants, some of whom I may collaborate with in the future.

In addition to the lectures, each evening we worked in small groups on a coursework project focused on modelling. This collaborative element of the school was both challenging and rewarding. My contribution to the group centred on explaining how lower-level models feed into higher-level models, demonstrating the importance of multiscale approaches in materials science. As the week progressed, our group refined our ideas and prepared a final presentation, which we delivered later in the programme. This experience not only strengthened my understanding of the topic but also improved my ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively.

The school was not solely focused on academic work; it also provided opportunities to relax and enjoy the surrounding environment. On the final day, we visited the Calanques de Piana, where we spent the afternoon appreciating the stunning natural scenery and pleasant weather. This excursion offered a perfect balance to the intensive learning of the previous days and allowed everyone to unwind and socialise in a more informal setting.

We concluded the programme with a meal at the harbour, which served as a fitting end to an inspiring and enjoyable week.
